We are here to help
As the new year started I was sitting with my wife and my best friend and his wife. We did the countdown to midnight and we started talking about our new year's resolutions. It was funny because I was reminded about an article I had read on entrepreneur.com, by Kai Sato. It's titled "Why the Five People Around Your Are Crucial to Your Success." Now there are many articles and thoughts around this concept. Essentially the article talks about making sure that the people around you are contributing to your success as an entrepreneur. The article also asks you to rate your friends for the same reason. In my opinion it's a little harsh to belittle someone in that manner. The funny thing is that it's an old saying that says, "tell me who your friends are, and I'll tell you who you are." My dad always tells me there is truth in old sayings. With that in mind maybe it's worth considering who is around us. I heard someone in talk radio say this and I've wanted to adapt it to myself. My new year's resolution is this: to build my circles. What I mean by that is that we all have circles. Family, friends, co-workers, etc. But I believe in creating another circle at coffee shops with the baristas, the regulars. Creating a circle with your childrens friends parents. With different people you meet come new opportunities as well. If we are to discredit people we will not find the opportunities that are out there. There is truth in the negativity people bring but it is our responsibility to be a good example to others. The article by Kai Sato did mention not to strive to be the smartest person in the room. We need to surround ourselves with people who, are not necessarily smarter, but who know more things in other areas in order for you to grow in a variety of ways. I believe this to be true. So lets grow in 2017 and let's make ourselves better by making others better.
